Announcement - Saturday 23rd May 2026

Today is the most important day in the football heritage calendar. We call it Football’s Square Mile Day, where we actively encourage everyone who loves the beautiful game to put on their shoes or trainers, or their bicycle clips, or get in the car, bus, or train, and explore the wonderful football heritage found within the World’s Biggest Open-Air Football Museum. We have moved football heritage out of the museums and archives, and back into the streets where the game developed.

On this day, in 2024, we installed 21 FSM Plaques and Signs around the City and SouthSide of Glasgow, collectively representing the most important football heritage site in the world, and the birthplace of the beautiful game. Today, we are launching the next phase of the project with our 5-Year FSM GamePlan, which outlines our vision and mission for the future of Football’s Square Mile. We are constantly smashing ceilings and inviting everyone to join the fun of exploring the stories, tales, and legends of these phenomenally important sites, which we are making more public, accessible, and enjoyable to visit.

We have five pillars within our heritage plan: Community, Research, Creativity, Culture, and Engagement.

David Coutts, FSM Communities Director, explains, "We’re not simply telling a history story. We are bringing heritage to life, connecting Scotland’s football story with the people and communities who shaped it. Football’s Square Mile is about more than dates and trophies; it’s about real lives, social change, migration, identity, culture, creativity and community. We want people to experience the story of Scotland's part in the development of modern football in a way that feels alive, relevant and welcoming to everyone.”

We love to tell you footballing stories from the past to inspire you with how the Scotch Professors took their ball around the world. Siggy Young, FSM Research Director, explains, "When the World Cup kicks off in a few weeks' time, take pride in the fact that half of the competing nations all share an origin point with what Scots took and gave to the world, and from what Queen’s Park Football Club and their cricketing friends developed in the heartlands of Glasgow. We are inspiring people from across the world to search out their footballing roots, and more and more are finding their way back to Scotland.”

It’s not just about facts and figures. Ashley Rawson, FSM Creative Director, explains, "Creativity lies at the centre of our approach to interpretation, and we use it to bring the stories of Fooball’s Square Mile to life. We are engaging our audiences and partners with creative interventions, including murals, installations, and an innovative signage trail for in-person and digital visitors. That said, we’re only just warming up, and we have the game plan to massively enhance each of our sites over the coming years.”

One of the vital parts of the game we play today isn’t in the results or the trophies, it’s the culture that surrounds the game. Julie McNeill, FSM Culture Director, explains, "We are a nation of storytellers. How can we let our own origin story pass us by? We are committed to bringing our history and heritage into the spotlight and celebrating all we have achieved. Here’s to the scotch professors, the poets, the ceiling smashers. We have work to do.”

And finally, we have not just uncovered history, but also changed the way people see football history in the first place. Graeme Brown, FSM Engagement Director, explains, 'Our mission is to engage the nation in asking themselves one question. Why don't I know about this? Our ultimate ambition is to create a nation of Football Heritage Activists, where people share our nation's footballing history, promote it for everyone to enjoy, and protect it for the future.

The legendary Scotch Professors are on their comeback tour and getting people excited to hear their trailblazing, cart-upending story. We are leading the way, encouraging people to explore, question, and learn this story for themselves at the World's Biggest Open-Air Football Museum. This is the greatest story never told….until now, and we are going to make sure we have a lot of fun telling it.”

We hope you see us around today in Football’s Square Mile. The FSM Team is setting off from FSM Site No. 1, the birthplace of the father of Argentinian Football (current holders of the World Cup), and aims to complete the epic 12-miler around the 21 FSM Sites by walking, cycling and running, with support from the world’s smallest mobile football museum.

We will be handing out our FSM Flyers to every football fan on their way to the Scottish Cup Final, where they are competing for the oldest domestic national football trophy still in existence.
