Announcement – Friday 6th September 2024
On September 6, 2023, the new Football’s Square Mile website was launched, celebrating the 21 sites which make up the World’s Biggest Open-Air Football Museum in the Southside of Glasgow.
In the last year, Football’s Square Mile (FSM) has gone from strength to strength with the installation of plaques and signs, the establishment of a not-for-profit company, registering the FSM trademark, and continuing to promote the events of The Hampden Collection. The ultimate goal is to enhance and develop the recognition of all 21 sites of FSM, leading towards our long-term UNESCO World Heritage ambitions for the area.
Today, we are delighted to announce, in partnership with Ashley Rawson (AshleyRawson.com) and the Victoria Bar, that Ashley has agreed to permanently loan one of his recent works celebrating the famous Tartan Army and their unmissable title from the Euros, ‘The Best Fans In The World’. This painting was unveiled yesterday at the Victoria Bar in the Southside of Glasgow, ahead of the Scotland v Poland match.
Ashley explains, ‘This is a tribute to the thousands of fans that travelled to Germany and have followed them over the years. The tears running down the cheeks of these two fans illustrate the emotional rollercoaster of being a Scotland fan. I wanted to ensure that the wider public could see this, and I am delighted the Victoria Bar has agreed to put it on display for the Tartan Army to see.’
The painting is on display within a setting enriched by its particular role in the dawn of association football in Scotland. The Victoria Bar is Site No. 11 within Football’s Square Mile, and Annie Kane, Manager of the Victoria Bar, is an Ambassador and member of the Football’s Square Mile Alliance.
Annie said, ‘We are thrilled to have one of Ashley’s prized paintings on our wall for everyone to see and love. Our passionate Tartan Army section is made up of our regulars, where many travelled to Germany to watch the Euros. The results did not go our way, but the appreciation of our fans was brilliant, as they made headlines across Europe for their devoted passion for the Scotland team.’
David Coutts, Director of The Football’s Square Mile Company, said, ’Ashley’s painting is a fantastic addition to FSM and will draw people into the Victoria Bar to learn more about the magnificent footballing history of the site.’
We encourage everyone interested in the story of the beautiful game to visit our website and explore the 21 sites within the world’s biggest open-air football museum.
