Announcement – Tuesday 17th September 2024

The Scottish Professors were the trailblazers who gave football to the world. We have teamed up with FirstBus to help you navigate the world’s biggest open-air museum using their bus network, and what better way to open this up to you than Glasgow Doors Open Day 2024, which is celebrating the immigration and emigration which have shaped Glasgow and beyond.

Where will you end your global travels across the 21 sites, which represent the cradle of the modern passing game?

David Coutts, Director of Football’s Square Mile, delighted by the wins of Spain in the Euros and Argentina in Copa de America, says, “Why don’t you become a trailblazer in Football’s Square Mile and take the FirstBus to the sites with links to these footballing powerhouses?”

Duncan Cameron, First Bus Scotland Managing Director, said: “Glasgow has a rich footballing history that is renowned across the world. We are delighted to be supporting Football’s Square Mile to showcase these iconic football locations in the city which can all be reached in a sustainable, environmentally friendly way using our bus routes. You can see which buses to catch by looking at the dedicated map on the First Bus website.”

We are extremely keen to showcase the power of Football’s Square Mile, which is available all year round and, most importantly, free of charge. Therefore, we are delighted to launch this map in conjunction with the Glasgow Doors Open Day Festival for 2024.

David Cook, Chief Executive, Glasgow Buildings Preservation Trust, says “Glasgow Doors Open Days Festival is the city’s biggest heritage event, which gives access to often-hidden gems of Glasgow’s architecture and, through walks, talks, and other events, encourages citizens and visitors to explore their history and the stories of the place they live in.

This year’s Festival theme, “We’re all here: Diversity and Diaspora”, celebrates those who came to the city and those who took Glasgow to the world. It’s fitting to be part of the announcement of this new resource to help people discover Glasgow’s world-class football history by visiting the Football’s Square Mile sites. You will find out how these sites connect us to the founding of the modern game of football, and how the Scotch Professors took it to the world.”

But it doesn’t stop there. Whilst navigating Football’s Square Mile on the bus, we’d recommend taking Julie McNeill’s poetry book ‘We are Scottish Football’ to accompany you. Julie’s poems describe the history of all 21 Sites in fantastic prose, and her fabulous book can be bought here.

Julie McNeill, The Hampden Collection Gaffer and author, explains, “Glasgow Doors Open Day’s 2024 theme, ‘We are all here’, epitomises the mission of The Hampden Collection and Football’s Square Mile. We are delighted to partner with FirstBus and Glasgow Buildings Preservation Trust to tell Glasgow and Scotland’s footballing story through our free open-air football museum.”

All you need is this bus map, this poetry book and your walking shoes to explore the most important football heritage site on the planet.
